Last year the festival continued to enjoy great success. Once again we received hundreds of films from filmmakers from around the world. We also launched a new Short Screenplay competition, for which there were over 100 entries, signifying it is a facet of the Film Festival where there is great demand, which we plan to continue for this year's festival.
Between the screenplay finalists and film competition finalists there was over a 70% attendance rate. Even though these results are excellent and the support from our sponsors and local business has been fantastic including our core funding from Waterford City Council and Failte Ireland, the festival finances are still low and we are just about able to meet our running costs.
This is due to lack of funds from various areas as the current recessionary climate has affected everyone, including the arts, but thanks to people who believe in this event we have secured enough funding to maintain the festival for another year.
We have many great supporters of this festival including arts officer Conor Nolan who has not only helped us with funding but has been able to provide us with a screening venue and a new office for the festival within the Greyfriars Municipal Art Gallery. It is planned to screen a wide range of films from the amateur to the professional, supporting independent films from local to international filmmakers as well as screenplay writers.
Some amendments have been made to this year's festival categories versus previous years:
The short film competition will now be called The Waterford City Council Award for Best Short Film.
There will be a cash award as well as a certificate for this award and there will be 2nd place Certificate for this category also. We will be open to feature films and feature documentaries but no short documentaries. The short screenplay competition will also have a cash award for first place as well as a certificate.
